What does SEO for builders involve?
SEO for builders works differently from SEO for most trades. A plumber wins a job in one phone call. A builder wins a contract after months of research, site visits, plans and a lot of reading, so the website has to rank for that research and then carry the client through it.
That changes the priorities:
- Fewer, bigger leads. Ten good enquiries a month can matter more than a hundred calls. SEO should attract the projects you want and filter out the rest.
- A page for each build type: custom homes, knockdown rebuilds, extensions, second storey additions, renovations, sloping blocks.
- Project pages, not one gallery, so each build can rank and prove what you do.
- Clear answers on process and price, because that's what people search and what AI tools quote.
- Follow up, because the enquiry is the start of a long sales cycle, not the end of one.
How much does SEO for builders cost?
Ongoing SEO for builders with Source Digital starts from $950 a month + GST, with no lock-in contract. A single signed build is usually worth many times a year of SEO, but only if the enquiries are the right fit, which is why the pages are written to qualify as well as attract.
| What you need | Cost (ex GST) | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing SEO + AEO | From $950 a month | You want a steady flow of the projects you're best at |
| AEO audit | From $1,500, one off | You want a fix list for your current site |
| Full AEO implementation | $3,000 to $8,000, depending on pages and complexity | A larger builder site that needs answers, schema and structure across every page |
| New builder website | $3,250, fixed price | Your site is a gallery and a contact page, or it's out of date |
It's the same base as our SEO for tradies service, rebuilt around a sales cycle measured in months rather than hours.

What do people search before they choose a builder?
They search in stages, and each stage needs a different page. Most builder websites only cater for the last stage, when the client already knows your name.
| Stage | Example searches | The page that answers it |
|---|---|---|
| Early research | "cost to build a house Perth", "knockdown rebuild cost" | A price guide with ranges you're comfortable publishing |
| Narrowing the build type | "builder for sloping block", "second storey addition builder" | Build type pages with real projects on them |
| Comparing builders | "custom home builders Brisbane", "renovation builder northern suburbs" | Area pages, project pages and reviews |
| Checking you out | "[your business] reviews", "[your business] licence" | About page, licence details, Google Business Profile |
| Getting ready to commit | "what is paid preconstruction", "questions to ask a builder before signing" | A process page that explains preconstruction and what it costs |
Fill the early stages and you meet clients months before your competitors do. That's where the better projects come from.
How should builders use project pages for SEO?
Give each finished build its own page with a short story, not just a set of photos. A project page can rank for the build type and the suburb, and it's the strongest proof you have.
- Build type, block and suburb in the heading, such as "Two storey custom home on a sloping block, Samford".
- The brief, the challenges and how you solved them, in a few short paragraphs.
- How long it took, and a budget range if the client is happy to share it.
- Before, during and after photos, with descriptive file names and alt text.
- A few words from the client if you have them.
- Links to the matching build type page.
Eight well written project pages will do more than a gallery of 300 photos. They also give AI tools specific examples when someone asks who builds that kind of home in their area.
Should builders target suburbs or regions?
Mostly regions, with suburb pages only where you build a lot. Builders usually cover a wide area, and people tend to search at region or city level, such as "custom home builder northern suburbs Perth" or "builder Moreton Bay", more than suburb by suburb.
Build an area page for each region you work in. On each one, show the projects you've built there and talk about what's local in your experience: typical block sizes, slopes, bushfire or coastal requirements, and how long approvals tend to take. That local knowledge is exactly what a generic page can't fake. Skip the 50 thin suburb pages with the name swapped.
How do builders show up in ChatGPT and Google AI answers?
By answering the questions clients ask in full sentences, on pages AI tools can read and trust. Building clients lean on AI tools heavily while they research, asking things like "is paid preconstruction worth it?" or "what should I ask a builder before signing?"
- FAQs on every page in the client's own words, marked up with FAQ schema.
- A plain explanation of your process, including what preconstruction costs and what the client gets for it.
- Your licence, insurance, years trading and service area stated plainly and the same everywhere.
- An llms.txt file that tells AI tools what your business does and which pages matter most.
Our AEO service covers this in more depth.
How does SEO fit a long building sales cycle?
SEO brings in the enquiry, but the contract is won in the follow up. A client might enquire in March and sign in October, and the builder who stays in touch without being pushy usually wins.
That's why we measure SEO for builders in qualified enquiries, preconstruction bookings and contracts, not traffic. It's also why the CRM matters as much as the website. Omega CS, our CRM, texts every new enquiry back in seconds, asks the project details, scores the lead and follows up quotes until the client says yes or no. For a Perth renovation builder, the result was "Over $580k in sales and $1.2M in pipeline in his first 30 days." See CRM for builders for how it's set up.
How we did it for Nailed It Creations
Nailed It Creations is a family custom home builder in Brisbane, QBCC licensed and trading since 2013. We rebuilt the site around his paid preconstruction process, with one call to action across the whole site. There are 87 questions in FAQ schema across 19 pages, an llms.txt file for AI tools, and his own CRM on Omega CS with an AI SMS agent that qualifies enquiries before he spends time on them. It launched in September 2026.
Every page moves a reader one step closer to booking preconstruction, and the CRM makes sure no enquiry sits unanswered. Read the Nailed It Creations case study, or see our builder website design service if your site needs rebuilding first.
Who it's not for: if you only build for developers, or you're booked out 18 months ahead, more search traffic won't change much for you.
