What is custom website development?
Custom website development is building a site from code, written for your business, instead of filling in a template on a platform like Wix or Squarespace. Every page, layout and feature is made to do a job for you, and nothing loads that you don't need.
For us, custom website development covers two kinds of build:
- Custom websites. Hand-coded HTML, CSS and JavaScript sites for businesses that want speed, full control of how each page ranks and a design that doesn't look like everyone else's.
- Custom web apps. Sites that do real work: quote and RFQ systems, searchable catalogues, customer portals, booking flows and dashboards.
Both are built by me in Perth, for businesses across Australia. No outsourcing and no page builders.
When is a custom website better than Squarespace or Shopify?
Custom is better when speed, search performance or a specific feature matters more than editing the site yourself. If you want to change text and photos every week without asking anyone, a platform is usually the better pick.
| What matters to you | Custom build | Squarespace or Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Page speed on mobile | Fastest, only the code each page needs loads | Good, but platform scripts add weight |
| Editing it yourself | Edits are usually done by a developer | Easy, drag and drop |
| Unusual features | Built to fit, no platform limits | Limited to what the platform and its apps allow |
| Control over SEO and structured data | Full control of every tag on every page | Good, within the platform's settings |
| Monthly running cost | About $10 to $30 for static hosting | Platform plan, plus apps on Shopify |
| Selling lots of products | Possible, but more work to manage | Shopify is built for it |
There's also a middle ground. Cup Filling Care runs a custom HTML site with a Shopify Buy Button for beans and merch, so they get custom speed with Shopify handling the checkout. If an online store is the main job, our Shopify website design page is a better place to start.
How much does custom website development cost?
A custom hand-coded website is priced like our other builds: $1,750 for a single page and $3,250 for a 5 to 8 page business site, ex GST. Custom stores start from $4,500. Custom web apps are quoted on request, and as a guide run $12,000 to $50,000+.
| Build | Price (ex GST) | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Single page custom site | $1,750 | One service, one area, one call to action |
| Custom business site, 5 to 8 pages | $3,250 | A page per service, built to rank |
| Custom online store | From $4,500 | Products with a Stripe or Shopify checkout |
| Custom web app | Quoted on request, guide $12,000 to $50,000+ | Portals, RFQ systems, catalogues, dashboards |
Static hosting for a custom site runs about $10 to $30 a month. A web app with a database costs more to run, and that cost is spelled out in the quote. Every price is fixed in writing before work starts.

Why are custom websites faster?
Custom websites are faster because they only load the code each page needs. Template platforms load scripts for features you'll never use, on every page, and a phone on mobile data feels every one of them.
Speed from recent custom builds:
- Mago Rods: moved off a Wix template to 9 hand-coded pages, with a 100 Lighthouse performance score.
- Safari Seekers: a custom HTML store with Stripe checkout, averaging a 0.9 second page load.
- Cup Filling Care: 94 Lighthouse performance.
Speed matters for two reasons. People leave slow sites before they enquire, and Google uses page experience as one of its ranking signals. A fast site won't rank by itself, but a slow one makes everything else harder.
What can a custom build do that a template can't?
A custom build can do whatever your business actually needs, not just what a platform's app store offers. That's where custom website development earns its price.
The clearest example is Equipment Group, a Perth mining parts supplier. They had 13 PDF catalogues. We turned them into 35,268 searchable pages with a custom RFQ system, so buyers can find a part and request a quote without picking up the phone. No template does that out of the box.
Other custom features we build include quote forms, customer portals, booking flows and lead forms that feed straight into a CRM. If the real problem is managing leads and jobs rather than the website, look at our custom CRM for tradies, or Omega CS, which texts every new web form lead back in seconds from your own Australian mobile number.
Who is custom website development not right for?
Custom isn't the right call for everyone, and it's better to know before you spend the money.
- You want to redesign pages yourself. On a hand-coded site, changes are quick for a developer but not drag and drop for you. Squarespace will suit you better.
- You sell hundreds of products and change them often. Shopify's admin is built for that.
- You need a site this week. Most custom sites take 2 to 4 weeks, and web apps take longer.
- Your budget is under $1,750. A DIY platform site will get you started.
If you want custom speed and control but still need regular small changes, ongoing support from $200 a month covers edits. You send a message and it gets done.
How a custom build works
- A free call. What the site needs to do, who uses it and what's not working now.
- Scope and fixed price. Pages, features, integrations and timeline in writing.
- Build. Hand-coded by me, with progress on a private link you can check any time.
- Test. Speed, mobile, forms, checkout and structured data checked before launch.
- Launch. Hosting set up, domain connected, tracking live and redirects in place if it replaces an old site.
Most custom websites go live in 2 to 4 weeks. Web apps depend on scope, and the timeline is in the quote. You deal with the person writing the code the whole way through.
