What does Shopify SEO actually involve?
Shopify SEO is making your store easy for Google and AI tools to read, then giving them pages worth showing. It comes down to three jobs: fixing the technical setup, writing collection and product pages around real searches, and earning some trust from other sites.
Shopify gives you a decent head start. It builds your sitemap, sets canonical tags and lets you edit the title and description on every page. What it can't do is decide which searches you should go after, write product copy that's different from every other stockist, or stop you installing apps that slow the store down. That part is the work.
- Technical: speed, duplicate URLs, redirects, structured data and indexing.
- On page: titles, meta descriptions, headings, collection copy, product descriptions and image alt text.
- Content: buying guides and answers to the questions customers ask before they buy.
- Authority: links and mentions from suppliers, local press and industry sites.
Is Shopify good for SEO?
Yes. Shopify is a solid platform for SEO and stores on it rank well every day. It has a few quirks worth knowing, and most of the problems we find come from the theme, the apps or the copy rather than Shopify itself.
| Area | What Shopify does | What usually needs fixing |
|---|---|---|
| Sitemap and robots.txt | Built automatically | Submitting the sitemap to Google Search Console and checking which pages are excluded |
| URL structure | Fixed prefixes like /products/ and /collections/ | Nothing to change there, but handles should be short and readable |
| Duplicate product URLs | A canonical tag points to the main product URL | Theme links that send Google to a collection version of every product |
| Titles and meta descriptions | Editable on every page | Left as the product name, or the same on every page |
| Speed | Fast hosting on a global network | Heavy themes, oversized images and apps loading code on every page |
| Structured data | Basic product data in most modern themes | Missing review, FAQ and business data, or errors left by old apps |
| Redirects | Offers a redirect when you change a URL | Old URLs from a previous platform that now return 404 errors |
Why isn't my Shopify store showing up on Google?
Usually it's one of five things, and most stores have more than one. They're all fixable without rebuilding the store.
- Collection pages with no words on them. A grid of products and a heading gives Google nothing to rank. Collections are where category searches like "women's one piece swimwear" land, so they need a short, useful intro and a few answers under the grid.
- Supplier descriptions. If you copy the manufacturer's product copy, so does every other stockist. Google picks one version to show, and it's rarely yours.
- Titles that don't match searches. "The Bondi" means something to you. Shoppers search "black high waisted bikini bottoms".
- A slow store on a phone. Every app you've tried can leave code behind, and uninstalling an app doesn't always remove what it added to your theme.
- A new domain with no history. A store that launched last month has no links or reviews pointing at it yet. That takes time and some deliberate work.
How do you optimise Shopify collection and product pages?
Collection pages go after the category searches and product pages pick up the specific ones. Get those two right and most of your Shopify SEO is done.
Collection pages
- One collection for each thing people actually search for, named the way they search it.
- A 2 to 3 sentence intro above the products, and a longer section below with sizing, care or buying advice.
- A unique title and meta description that says what's in the collection and why to buy from you.
Product pages
- Your own description, written for the shopper comparing you with two other tabs.
- The details people search for: size, material, fit, compatibility and model numbers.
- Descriptive image file names and alt text, so your photos can show up in image search.
- Reviews on the page, marked up so Google can read them.
For bigger catalogues we start with the 20 to 30 collections and products that make the most money, rather than rewriting 500 product pages at once.
Will Shopify SEO help my store show up in ChatGPT and AI answers?
Yes, the same work helps. ChatGPT, Google's AI answers and Perplexity quote pages that answer a question clearly and can be read without guessing, so clean structure and plain answers matter more now than they did a few years ago.
- Structured data for your products, reviews, business and FAQs, so AI tools know what you sell and what it costs.
- Plain answers on the page. "Does this fit a size 10?" answered in one sentence beats a paragraph of brand story.
- Consistent details across your store, Google Business Profile and social pages, so your name, location and range match everywhere.
Shopify stores we've built and worked on
Every Shopify store we build is set up for search before launch, not patched later.
- Malaya Swimwear: a Perth swimwear brand. Shopify rebuild with a bespoke theme, 3 week build, 21 products launched.
- Vlosity Motorsport: a Perth detailing studio and car care brand. Its Wix services site and separate Shopify store were merged into one Shopify site with service bookings, with 28 products migrated and 3 service categories.
If you're changing platforms, most of the SEO risk sits in the move itself. Our Shopify migration page covers how we keep your rankings through it.
How a Shopify SEO project works
- A free 15 minute call. You send me your store URL. If you have Google Search Console set up, I'll ask for access.
- I look under the hood. Speed, indexing, duplicate pages, structured data, apps and the searches you already show up for.
- A fixed price quote. What I'd fix, what I'd write and in what order, in writing before any work starts.
- Technical fixes first. They're quick, and everything else builds on them.
- Collections and products next. Starting with the pages that make you money.
- Check the results. We track searches, clicks and organic sales in Search Console and Shopify analytics, not vanity numbers.
If the theme itself is the problem, a rebuild can cost less than patching it. If that's the case I'll tell you and quote a Shopify website design instead.
How long does Shopify SEO take to work?
Technical fixes can show up in Google within weeks. New rankings from rewritten collection and product pages usually take 2 to 3 months, and competitive categories like fashion or supplements take longer.
Shopify SEO isn't for every store, and it's better to know that before you spend money on it:
- If you have five products and need sales this week, Google Ads will get you there faster. SEO can follow once you know which products sell.
- If you mostly sell to one city and also offer a service, local SEO and your Google Business Profile may matter more than product pages.
- If nobody has time to write or approve real product copy, results will be limited, because the copy is most of what Google ranks.
