How much does a Shopify website cost in Australia?
Shopify website cost comes down to two things: what you pay once to get the store built, and what you pay every month to run it. The build can be close to $0 if you do it yourself on a free theme, or from $4,500 + GST for a professional build.
The build prices in this guide are our own fixed prices, ex GST, because those are the numbers I can stand behind. Other developers will price differently, so always ask what's included.
| Option | Upfront cost | Ongoing cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY with a free theme | $0 plus your time | Shopify plan, apps, payment fees | Small ranges, tight budgets, owners with spare time |
| DIY with a paid theme | A one-off theme purchase from the Shopify Theme Store | Same as above | Owners who want a more polished look without a designer |
| Professional build on a customised theme | From $4,500 + GST | Same, plus optional support from $200 a month + GST | Most growing stores |
| Bespoke theme or complex build | Quoted on request | Same, plus optional support | Design-led brands, large catalogues, system integrations |
Every option pays the same Shopify plan. The difference is how much of the setup, design and SEO you do yourself.
What are the monthly costs of running a Shopify store?
Running costs are the part of Shopify website cost people forget. Expect four regular costs: your Shopify plan, apps, payment fees and your domain name. The plan is the only one you can't avoid.
| Cost | Who you pay | How it's charged | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify plan | Shopify | Monthly, or yearly at a discount | The price depends on the plan. Check Shopify's Australian pricing page, as rates change |
| Paid apps | Each app developer | Usually monthly | The cost that creeps up. Audit them every few months |
| Payment processing | Shopify Payments or your gateway | A fee on each sale | A third party gateway instead of Shopify Payments adds an extra Shopify transaction fee |
| Domain name | Your domain registrar | Yearly | A .com.au or .com address |
| Support and changes | Your developer, optional | Monthly or as needed | From $200 a month + GST on our support |
Apps are where most Shopify budgets drift. Each one solves a small problem for a small monthly fee, and a year later the store is paying for ten of them, some doing the same job. A good theme often covers what three or four apps would.
What makes a Shopify build cost more?
The biggest swings in Shopify website cost come from five things. If your store has none of them, expect to sit near the bottom of the range.
- Catalogue size and mess. 20 products with clean data is quick. 2,000 products with inconsistent variants, missing weights and supplier photos takes real time to clean up and load.
- Bespoke design. Customising a theme is quicker than designing and coding one from scratch. Bespoke makes sense when the look is the sale, as it often is for fashion and lifestyle brands.
- Moving from another platform. Bringing across products, customers and orders, and redirecting every old URL, adds work, but it costs far less than losing your rankings. Our Shopify migration page explains what's involved.
- Integrations. Connecting stock, accounting, warehouse or ERP systems, or a supplier feed.
- Custom features. Product builders, trade pricing, quote requests, bookings, or anything an app can't do cleanly.
Photos and copy matter too. If you don't have good product photos, budget for a photographer, because no design survives bad photos.
Should I build my Shopify store myself or hire someone?
Build it yourself if you have a small range, some time and a tight budget. Hire someone if your time is worth more on the business, or if you've had a go and the store isn't selling.
Shopify is genuinely easy to start, and plenty of owners get a free theme looking decent over a few weekends. Where DIY stores usually fall short:
- SEO basics: default titles, empty collection pages and copied supplier descriptions.
- Speed: too many apps, each adding code to every page.
- Shipping and tax: rates that lose money on heavy items, or GST set up wrong.
- Trust: missing policies, contact details and reviews that shoppers look for before they pay.
A middle path works for a lot of stores: start DIY, then pay a developer to fix the setup once you're making sales. Just be honest with yourself about how many weekends it's really taking.
Is a custom Shopify theme worth the extra cost?
For most stores, no. A quality theme, customised well, sells just as effectively and costs less to build and maintain. A bespoke theme earns its cost when your brand is what people are buying.
| Factor | Customised theme | Bespoke theme |
|---|---|---|
| Build cost | Lower | Higher |
| Build time | Faster | Slower |
| Looks unique | Partly | Fully |
| Theme updates | From the theme developer | Handled by your developer |
| Best for | Most stores, any catalogue size | Fashion, lifestyle and design-led brands |
If you're unsure, start with a theme. You can move to a bespoke design later, once the store is earning and you know what your customers respond to.
How does Shopify cost compare to WooCommerce and custom builds?
Shopify usually costs less to build than WooCommerce and more per month, because you pay for the platform rather than for hosting and upkeep. The fair comparison is the total over two or three years, not just the build price.
| Platform | Build price (ex GST) | Monthly running costs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | From $4,500 | Shopify plan, paid apps, payment fees | Product businesses that want to grow without managing servers |
| WooCommerce | From $8,000 | Hosting about $10 to $50 a month, paid plugins, regular updates | Stores already on WordPress that need full control |
| Custom storefront | From $4,500 | Static hosting about $10 to $30 a month, payment fees | Small, fixed ranges where speed and design matter most |
| Custom web app | $12,000 to $50,000+ | Hosting and maintenance, quoted | Quoting, RFQ systems and very large catalogues |
WooCommerce costs more to build because there's more to set up: hosting, security, plugins and the checkout itself. After launch it needs regular updates, which is a cost in time or money. Our Shopify vs WooCommerce guide goes through it in detail.
Squarespace is worth a look if you're mainly a service business with a few products on the side. Its commerce plans handle small ranges well, and our Shopify vs Squarespace guide compares the two.
How can I keep my Shopify costs down?
Most savings on Shopify website cost come from three habits: pay for the plan you need now, keep apps to a minimum, and do the content work yourself where you can.
- Pay yearly for your Shopify plan once you're sure you're staying, as Shopify discounts yearly billing.
- Use Shopify Payments where you can, to avoid the extra transaction fee on third party gateways.
- Audit your apps every few months. Cancel what you don't use, and check the code it left behind has gone too.
- Start on the plan you need now, not the one you might need in two years. Upgrading later is easy.
- Start with a theme, and only go bespoke once the store is earning.
- Write your own product copy and take your own photos if you can. It's cheaper, and it ranks better than supplier copy.
- Get a fixed price quote in writing, so the build cost can't creep.
